I am reminded of Bob Dylan's Blind Willie McTell, one of his best songs, which links slavery to the land being condemned and to "power and greed, and corruptible seed".

My own observation from a distance is that American culture is deeply independent and selfish, so that almost anything (including slavery) can be justified somehow if it suits the individual. What this says about American christianity, granted it has been a highly christianised nation, is interesting.

I should add I don't thereby think Australian culture is necessarily any better, just different.unkleEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12207729664951716799noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2660668851365225517.post-81175965275043814022016-05-15T17:49:34.198-07:002016-05-15T17:49:34.198-07:00I believe Pat McDonald did his PhD on Humboldt. Lewis. I can't decide if he put Tolkien in here yet. I was tempted to think he might be "Dunn" but I'm not really seeing it. Each character doesn't have to be the equivalent of one of his friends anyhow. It was just fun to see some of Lewis's arguments in Hunter's dialogue.J.A.A.
